A proposed magnesium wheel option for the Cadillac Blackwing lineup appears to have been postponed, this time for good.
First announced in 2020, this mild performance upgrade is expected to eventually make its way onto the options list for the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. Now, several years later, the wheel option has yet to materialize, and at this point, it likely never will.

In October 2020, Cadillac announced that magnesium wheels were in development for its high-performance V-Series Blackwing sedan. The appeal is clear: a factory-backed option that can improve driving dynamics through reduced weight and increased responsiveness, plus slick bronze styling.
However, when both models launched, that option was missing. Despite this, Cadillac stated in 2024 that the upgrade is still under consideration, indicating that it has not been completely abandoned.

Fast forward to today, and that view has changed. Production of the CT4 is now scheduled to end in June, while the next-gen CT5 is also on the way. Worse yet, there’s been no official confirmation that GM is working on a future V-Series variant for the CT5, and without any future applications, the Cadillac Blackwing’s magnesium wheel program appears to have quietly ended.
Magnesium wheels have long been valued in high performance and motorsports applications for several key reasons, primarily the reduced unsprung mass that improves response and handling, plus improved acceleration and braking. The magnesium wheels also offer superior heat dissipation, which helps regulate temperatures after repeated stops. All these amenities will be in perfect harmony with the two Cadillac Blackwing models.

That said, it’s also worth mentioning that magnesium wheels are no different significantly more expensive than traditional aluminum alloys. If we were to guess, those high costs, likely accompanied by production bottlenecks and other validation hurdles, colluded to prevent Cadillac from offering a magnesium wheel option.
