As GM Authority has been reporting for some time, General Motors will launch a new Buick sedan for the US market, marking the brand’s first RWD car in three decades. Buick’s upcoming sedan will ride on GM’s updated Alpha 2-2 platform, which will also underpin the next-generation Cadillac CT5 and its future Chevy Camaro replacement. We previously asked what the name of this new model would be. It’s true, with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout (and all-wheel drive expected to be optional), the new model presents a unique opportunity for Buick, and raises an interesting question in the process – should the new Buick sedan lean towards it? luxury, showor attack a balance between the two?

On the one hand, the luxury focus on the new Buick sedan will reconnect the brand with its traditional identity. Nameplates like the Buick LeSabre, Buick Lucerne, and Buick Park Avenue emphasized quiet cabins, comfortable ride quality, and upscale materials, all without pushing into Cadillac territory. Applying a similar formula to a modern rear-wheel drive platform could result in a compelling alternative to mainstream and premium rivals. With refined suspension tuning, advanced noise isolation, and a focus on comfort, Buick could carve out a niche for buyers looking for luxury without the bells and whistles of performance-oriented sedans.

On the other hand, Alpha-based architecture also opens the door to a more performance-oriented approach. Historically, Buick has teased performance through models like the Buick Grand National and (to a lesser extent) the Buick Regal GS. A modern interpretation could mean sharper handling, more aggressive styling and a driver-focused cabin combined with plenty of power under the hood, appealing to enthusiasts who want the thrill of performance without the sticker shock of a full-fledged V-Series.

The third option is to follow the existing strategy in Buick’s crossover lineup. Models like the Buick Envision and Buick Encore GX offer a tiered approach with the value-oriented Preferred trim, the sportier-looking Sport Touring variant, and the more premium Avenir model. Applying this formula to the new Buick sedan would allow the brand to cover a wide range of bases, offering sporty visuals and upscale luxury without committing completely to either.
With its rear-wheel-drive underpinnings and available all-wheel drive, Buick’s upcoming sedan has hardware that can go in multiple directions – so which way do you point? Let us know via poll!
