GMC Sierra Has Lighting Feature That Chevy Silverado Doesn’t

Posted on

The GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado are very similar, sharing the same mechanical bits and the same platform. However, if you look closely, you’ll also find a long list of design differences. One of the differences between the two pickups lies in the exterior lighting, specifically the taillight assemblies and how each truck employs LED technology throughout its lineup.

For the GMC Sierra 1500, top-level trims, including the SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate, are equipped from the factory with full LED taillights. This includes LED functionality for all lighting elements, including reverse lights. Meanwhile, lower trims, including the Pro, SLE, and Elevation, feature a mix of lighting elements, combining the signature LED with incandescent bulbs for the stop, turn, and reverse lights.

On the other hand, the Chevy Silverado takes a different approach. While the Silverado also offers two different taillight clusters, the base setup found on lower trims doesn’t include LEDs at all, instead relying entirely on incandescent bulbs. Top-level trims get the signature LED lighting and animations, but retain the reverse incandescent headlights. As a result, the Silverado 1500 does not offer LED reverse lights in any configuration, giving the GMC Sierra a clear advantage in that specific area.

The differences continue with the heavy-duty line-up. Higher trims of the Chevy Silverado HD (ZR2, LTZ, and High Country, LT optional) feature full LED taillight assemblies, while the WT, Custom, and LT (standard) trims use glow clusters. Meanwhile, the GMC Sierra HD splits the difference, with the Pro and SLE trims using a mix of LED and incandescent headlights, and higher trims once again adopting full LED lighting across the board.

Looking at the Silverado’s taillights, the design is more angular and segmented, with a clear division of lighting elements. The base version looks simpler and more utilitarian, while the top-level variant adds LED accents but maintains a slightly blocky structure. The reverse lights are positioned in separate lower sections, reinforcing the cluster’s modular appearance.

In comparison, the Sierra’s taillight design is more sculpted and refined, especially on higher trims. LED elements create a more continuous and smooth lighting signature, with smoother transitions between sections.
