The Ford F-150 Rattler may be ready to make a comeback, reemerging as an affordable, off-road-focused variant of the popular light pickup. If confirmed, the new Rattler will once again position itself as a value-oriented alternative that will go head-to-head with rivals like the Chevy Silverado Custom Trail Boss, and will be replaced with the 2027 model year.
It’s the latest from our sister publication, Ford Authoritywhich recently published a series of spy photos capturing a potential Ford F-150 Rattler prototype.
2023 Ford F-150 Rattler
Originally launched for the 2023 model year, the Ford F-150 Rattler is based on the entry-level XL trim and bundles in some of the off-road-oriented upgrades typically associated with the FX4 package. Highlights include a revised suspension, skid plates, and an electronic locking rear differential, giving buyers better trail capabilities without needing to jump up to a higher trim level. Despite the news strong receptionthe package was discontinued for the 2024 model year.

This newly spotted prototype suggests a similar formula, albeit with some important changes. Unlike the original Rattler, which featured a dual exhaust setup, this test truck used a more conventional single side-exit exhaust system. Wheel and tire specifications have also been revised. The previous version used 18-inch alloy wheels with General Grabber tires, while the new prototype appears to adopt 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 rubber, with thick sidewalls that are better suited to off-road conditions.

Visually, the truck doesn’t appear to have undergone any major design changes. The front and rear bumpers match those on the current XL trim, with the test vehicle’s black painted body color appearance.
If the Ford F-150 Rattler returns, it would buck the trend of greater off-road capability associated with increasingly expensive trims. The current F-150 lineup requires an upgrade to models like the STX FX4 or Tremor in terms of increased off-road agility, significantly raising the price of entry. For reference, the F-150 STX FX4 starts at $54,750, while the F-150 Tremor starts at $67,710. Meanwhile, the Silverado Custom Trail Boss starts at $55,695. This new F-150 Rattler will likely undercut all of the above, with the original model priced around the mid-$40,000s.
