The next-generation 2027 Chevy Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra will be two of the most important launches for General Motors in recent years, ushering in a complete redesign with significant changes to the design, powertrain and cabin. However, the next generation of trucks also presents an opportunity for The General to simplify its offerings. Therefore, we wonder – will GM continue to offer both pickups in a Double Cab body configuration?
Current generation Silverado Double Cab
Recent production schedules suggest that the Double Cab may be on loan, with GM ending production of the Double Cab configuration for the 2026 model year earlier than the other two pickup body configurations. For your information, assembly of the Double Cab body configuration is limited to GM’s Fort Wayne plant in Indiana. This phasing out is different from the Crew Cab and Regular Cab variants, which continue to be launched in high volumes.
Inventory data also reinforces the trend. Double Cab models currently represent only a small portion of trucks available at dealers, namely about 4.2 percent of total Silverado units (2,566 of 60,949) and 13.8 percent of total Sierra units (8,435 of 61,298 units), indicating relatively weak demand compared to Regular Cab and Double Cab models.
2027 Chevy Silverado Prototype
Meanwhile, GM AuthoritySpy photographers have captured several prototypes of the upcoming 2027 Chevy Silverado, including the High Country, Trail Boss, ZR2, and the work-oriented WT. However, all these sightings failed to reveal a Double Cab prototype. The same goes for the next-gen GMC Sierra prototype, which was seen in Denali, AT4, and AT4X specs, but no Double Cab body configuration.
All of this appears to be in line with GM’s broader corporate strategy of “winning with simplicity,” which aims to reduce manufacturing complexity and simplify the number of trims and configurations with the ultimate goal of lowering costs. Additionally, we’ve seen a similar strategy applied to the current-generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, which have done away with the Extended Cab configuration entirely.
2027 GMC Sierra Prototype
That said, GM hasn’t officially confirmed that the next-gen 2027 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will ditch the Double Cab body configuration, so this is all speculation at this point.
But what to do You think about it – should GM keep the Double Cab, or is it time to move on? Let us know in the comments!
