Chevy Malibu Recalled For Faulty Rearview Camera

Posted on

General Motors has issued a recall of certain Chevy Malibu models due to a defect that may cause rearview camera images to appear distorted or fail completely. This issue impacts vehicles from the 2023 to 2025 model years. If the rearview camera is not working properly, it can reduce rearward visibility when reversing, increasing the chance of a collision.

The problem: The problem centers on the rearview camera assembly, which may suffer from a lack of adhesive bonding inside the camera housing. GM indicated that the bonding process used by supplier Sharp Electronics could weaken over time. Exposure to moisture can damage the seal of the container, causing a distorted or blank display.

The danger: A malfunctioning rearview camera reduces the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle when performing reverse maneuvers. As noted in NHTSA filing, “improperly displayed rearview images reduce the driver’s view of the rear of the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of an accident.”
