As GM Authority As previously reported, Buick is scheduled to re-enter the US sedan segment with a fresh new model, marking a major change for the Tri-Shield brand after years of focusing exclusively on crossovers. The new Buick sedan will ride on the updated GM Alpha 2-2 platform, making it one of three future GM models to do so. Importantly, that means the upcoming sedan will be rear-wheel drive, marking the first RWD model Buick has offered in roughly 10 years. three decades.
The last time Buick offered a RWD passenger car was the Buick Roadmaster, which ended production after the 1996 model year. Since then, all subsequent Buick cars have used a front-wheel-drive layout, and some added all-wheel drive as an option. That includes later generations for nameplates like the Century, LeSabre, Riviera, Park Avenue, and Lucerne, all of which were previously FWD, while models like the Regal and LaCrosse also offered AWD variants.
Of course, the shift to FWD isn’t unique to General Motors, with a broader industry trend prioritizing packaging efficiencies and cost reductions associated with FWD layouts. Even so, enthusiasts immediately regretted the loss of dynamics and driving sensation when moving the driving force to the front axle.
According to GM Authority sources, the new Buick sedan will ride on the updated Alpha 2-2 platform, which is also expected to underpin the next-generation Cadillac CT5 and the upcoming Chevy Camaro replacement. The Alpha family of platforms has historically been associated with performance-oriented, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive vehicles, and the updated Alpha 2-2 platform will be no different, meaning we can expect the new Buick sedan to adopt a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration, with all-wheel drive likely offered as an option.
This big news, because for the past few years, Buick’s US portfolio has consisted entirely of utility vehicles like the Enclave, Envision, and Encore GX. It’s true, Buick’s new RWD-based sedan can serve multiple roles, reinforcing the brand’s heritage with a more engaging driving experience while competing more directly with entry-lux and near-premium competitors from brands like Lexus and Acura. This could also help reinvigorate the brand with a more youthful and sporty look.
