Cadillac wants to be a fully electrified brand by the end of the decade. This is an ambitious goal that is just getting started. The company will start production of the Lyriq earlier this year, followed by the Celestiq sedan, but what happens after that? Cadillac wouldn’t say so, but in a new interview with Automotive News, the company gave a hint of where it’s going to get design inspiration for those future models.
The luxurious new Cadillacs will take their style cues from many of the latest concepts – single-passenger vertical take-off and landing vehicles, autonomous shuttles, and self-driving all-electric coupes. An important part of the future product is the interior space, which will need to be reorganized if fully autonomous cars are to come. Cadillac needed to reimagine what passengers would do in a car when they didn’t have to focus on driving.

Joe Baker, creative interior design manager for GM’s advanced design team, told the publication that customers expect “something very different” when it comes to electric vehicles. The automaker may have to do more than just add a large screen to the car’s interior to make it feel futuristic and premium. At Cadillac, PersonalSpace, SocialSpace, and especially the concept of InnerSpace will play a role in defining the design and features.
Cadillac’s InnerSpace concept focuses on creating a sublime and inviting interior experience for luxury autonomous vehicles. Cadillac made technology a key part of the concept, with AI software adding layers of personalization that can tune music, temperature, and other vehicle settings. The vehicle will be able to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure and use that data to determine your mood and what vehicle settings you might want.
While Cadillac may see these concepts as inspiration, don’t expect any of them to enter production. They’re a little too radical for the roads – and the skies – for now, but Cadillac is right to think about the future. For more than 100 years, steering wheels and pedals have dominated interior design. If autonomous cars are the future – and it will be years before this technology is fully realized – then we need something to get done behind the wheel.
