Ram has quietly captured a high position in a very specific niche. While the Blue Oval Brigade and the General’s loyalists were busy arguing over half-ton patrol trucks, engineers in Auburn Hills delivered something the market didn’t think was necessary: the 2027 Ram 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle. It was the first and only three-quarter-ton truck to pass a Michigan State Police evaluation, a fact Stellantis announced with little fanfare but great confidence.

The Ram 2500 ERV builds on the existing Special Service Vehicle, adding a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine that produces 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission channels power through a four‑10 axle ratio and anti-roll differential, propelling this big truck to 60 mph in 8.41 seconds. Top speed is limited by the tires at 103 mph, achieved in less than half a mile. The Cummins turbodiesel mill available in the Ram HD civilian specification is not available in this police version; perhaps because police rarely tow horse trailers.

“When your job means running toward danger, not away from it, you don’t have time to rethink your gear,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Brand Americas at Stellantis. The Ram 2500 ERV also features a transfer-case skid plate, 18-inch steel wheels, dual 400-amp alternators and a vehicle systems interface module for communications equipment. It all lasted 32 laps at Michigan’s Grattan Raceway, a brutal test of chassis dynamics.

Which brings us to the gap in the General’s ranks. Chevrolet offered a capable Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle, based on the 1500 series. It was a fine truck, armed with a 5.3L V8 L84 and six-piston Brembo brakes. But GM has nothing to offer in the heavy-duty segment for pursuit duty. The Silverado HD is a workhorse, not a chaser. As one GM Envolve representative put it last year, “The changes and enhancements to our 2025 model year police vehicle lineup are the result of input from our law enforcement customers.”

The feedback apparently didn’t include a request to pursue the 2500. Ram listened and GM didn’t. The 2027 Ram 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle arrives in the second half of 2026, and for now, it will patrol the segment alone.
