Porsche May Bring Taycan and Panamera Together to Cut Costs

Porsche’s new boss, Michael Leiters, has a lot to do as he arrives at a time when things are not going well at Zuffenhausen. Year-on-year sales fell for the second time, dropping 10 percent in 2025 after dropping three percent in 2024. The company has particularly struggled in China, where demand has fallen by double digits for three straight years.

The former McLaren CEO replaced Oliver Blume shortly after the company made some big decisions. Not only will the Macan crossover get a gas-powered replacement, but so will the Boxster and Cayman sports cars, with all three models set to sit alongside their respective EV models. Additionally, the three-row SUV will be launched with a combustion engine, not just an EV model as originally planned.

The electric Cayenne just came out to join the gas-powered version, and this dual strategy may also apply to other model families. New report from British magazine automatic car claims that Porsche bosses are considering folding the Panamera and Taycan ranges into one model line.

Merging the two names would result in significant savings at a time when Porsche needs funds to engineer a range of new models while grappling with lower sales. For years, the Panamera and Taycan coexisted peacefully, one catering to ICE consumers and the other to the electric vehicle customer base. Their paths may eventually converge, as a unified model could share more hardware than continuing as two separate cars.

It’s unclear what name will be given to the new model, but the Panamera would make more sense than the Taycan, considering the gas-powered car has been around for nearly two decades. Porsche definitely knows which of the two nameplates carries more weight with customers, and it’s not the Taycan.

As global sales figures show, demand for the Taycan is waning amid stiff competition in the electric vehicle segment. This is especially true in China, where domestic automakers are launching much cheaper, technology-laden models. The brand name can only take Porsche so far, and local buyers increasingly see domestic products as a better choice. 2025 is the worst year for the Taycan.

When will the Taycan be replaced? Considering that it has been around since the end of 2019, Porsche can’t let it go any longer. China seems to launch a high-end electric vehicle every other day, so Germany will need some form of retaliation if it wants to stay relevant in the world’s largest car market.

However, the global luxury electric vehicle market is not where the company wants it to be, so investing in an electric Panamera may not be a top priority. With many gas and hybrid models being developed, there is greater opportunity for development. Meanwhile, Porsche has assured ICE loyalists that the V8 engine will remain in the Panamera until the 2030s.
