Volkswagen Gives China the Big Screen It Craves

  • ID. The Unyx 08 doesn’t look like your average Volkswagen.
  • It has a dual 14.96-inch display and a 10.25-inch digital driver display.
  • The electric SUV developed with Xpeng will go on sale in the coming weeks.

While we wait for Volkswagen to turn its Chinese Teramont Pro into the 2027 Atlas, there’s another SUV coming soon, but this one won’t be shared with the rest of the world. Instead, ID is coming. Unyx 08 will be restricted to the Chinese border. We first saw its exterior last November, when we were surprised by its very different design compared to the global model. Now, it’s time to peek inside.

ID. The Unyx 08’s cabin is another reminder of how Chinese customers prefer screens, often to the detriment of physical controls. VW itself said so last year when explaining the differences between regions. While European buyers prioritize “tactile control, long-term durability and driving dynamics,” Chinese clients want “AI-first and connected vehicles, with seamless voice controls and intelligent cockpits.”

The center console appears to be devoid of conventional buttons, making room for a pair of 14.96-inch displays with 2.4K resolution. There is still a separate instrument cluster measuring 10.25 inches and protruding too much from the dashboard like the center display. However, not everything transfers to the screen. We were happy to see regular controls on the steering wheel and doors.

Elsewhere, ID. The Unyx 08 features a 1.74 square meter (18.73 square foot) dimming panoramic glass roof, with 10 levels of opacity adjustment via voice control or touch screen. There’s a dual wireless charging pad above the lower storage area, while rear passengers get a large tray that folds out of the front seats. VW has packed a 20-speaker sound system and leather seats with 10-way electrical adjustment.

ID. The Unyx 08 is a Volkswagen Anhui joint venture product and not an entirely VW product, as it was developed jointly with Xpeng. If you can’t beat them, you might as well join them, right? Although the cabin may appear similar to the ID. The Era 9X was introduced last week, it’s a different electric SUV created by the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture, complete with a range-extending gas engine.

this identification mark. The Unyx 08 is pure electric, with a design that you probably wouldn’t know was VW’s if not for the badge. Inside and out, it looks very different from previous models, both global and Chinese. This electric SUV was first previewed last year by ID. Evo concept, and will go on sale in a few weeks.

It is 196.9 inches (5,000 millimeters) long and has a large 119.2 inch (3,030 millimeter) wheelbase. Fold the rear seats, and the expanded cargo area holds 65.1 cubic feet (1,845 liters). VW intends to sell the electric SUV in single- and dual-motor versions, along with 82 and 95 kWh battery options. The range is up to 454 miles (730 kilometers), even in the light CLTC cycle.

Motorcycle Pickup1: VW is doing the right thing by separating its Chinese models from its global products. For decades, they implemented a unified strategy of selling largely the same vehicles, usually with extended wheelbases to increase legroom. Now, it seems they are making greater efforts to provide truly local vehicles to Chinese buyers, some of which are co-developed with domestic automakers.

The new wave of electric vehicles for China comes at a time when Volkswagen Group’s electric sales are experiencing a decline in the country. Demand falls by 44 percent by 2025, and apparently, AUDI, the new brand created together with SAIC, is unchanged. To overcome dwindling sales, the conglomerate aims to launch more than 20 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across its brands this year alone.
