Combustion Supercars Will Be ‘Thought About’ Someday

Posted on
 • A new supercar is not impossible, according to Audi’s CEO.
 • Gernot Döllner claims a halo car ‘may one day be thought of’, but under the name R8.
 • Meanwhile, electric sports cars are coming soon.

Audi’s lineup could certainly use more pizzazz. Luckily, Ingolstadt added to its portfolio this year with the new RS5 sedan and wagon, while the next-generation RS6 will also be released in 2026 in both body styles. But no model could overcome a gap in the company’s range: the two-door car. With the A5, TT and R8 in the rearview mirror, a coupe is sorely missed.

The German luxury brand aims to address this gap with the Concept C, which will arrive in the next two years. This would also make up for the lack of a convertible, as the electric sports car is equipped with an electrically retractable targa roof. Looking further ahead, Audi bosses are leaving the door open for other supercars.

In an interview with Car and DriverGernot Döllner says the halo model “could someday make sense.” Lord of the Rings ruled out reviving the R8 moniker, just as the Concept C will not wear the TT name when the production model arrives. Audi officials didn’t elaborate, but it’s reasonable to expect any supercar to borrow the platform that underlies the Lamborghini Temerario.

The previous generation of the R8 was joined by the Gallardo and Huracan to share costs, and given the current economic climate, it would be difficult to justify developing a new platform from scratch. After all, the Concept C is cut from the same cloth as Porsche’s 718 EV, although it remains unclear whether the Zuffenhausen electric Boxster and Cayman are still in production.

Earlier this week, Döllner told Australian media that if Audi wanted to build an off-road vehicle to rival the Mercedes G-Class, it would have to use an existing body-on-frame platform. Reading between the lines, company bosses alluded to a model based on the Scout Traveler, a go-anywhere electric SUV by 2027 with a range-extending gas engine option.

Platform sharing is now more relevant than ever. The Volkswagen Group needs to save every euro cent to remain competitive as the threat of China looms over Europe and other regions. Business publication Magazine Manager recently accused the automotive conglomerate of planning “massive” cost cuts, potentially as much as 20 percent to save €60 billion by the end of 2028.

Motorcycle Pickup1: Logically, a new supercar doesn’t rank high on the priority list, especially since the Concept C has already been given the green light for production. One exotic model may be enough, as Döllner has admitted that sales will reach “very low five figures”. More expensive models with Lamborghini roots will be harder to sell, despite the advantage of being powered by a combustion engine.

Using Temerario as a foundation would speed up development and limit costs, but Döllner’s tone suggests that an indirect successor to the R8 remains wishful thinking for now. With the arrival of electric sports cars around 2028, it would be unrealistic to expect Audi to take over the big challenge this decade, if it happens at all.
