- Sources say that the Charger Hellcat has been given the green light, but the project is still in the early development stages.
- The Charger Hellcat may arrive in time for the 2028 model year.
- It’s likely the Hellcat version will be the only V8 offering, ahead of the six-cylinder version of the Charger.
Since the death of the previous generation, Dodge fans have been clamoring for a V8 version of the Charger. Thankfully, this could start as early as next year.
Source close to Mopar Insider said that development of the Charger Hellcat has begun. Although reportedly still in the early stages, this high-powered Charger will likely arrive for the 2028 model year. That means potential sales time around the second half of 2027.

Tim Kuniskis, Ram’s current CEO and head of the reconstituted SRT Division, previously stated that if the current Charger gets a V8 engine, it likely won’t be the 5.7-liter Hemi. The 6.4-liter V8 makes less power than the Hurricane’s twin-turbocharged 550 hp inline-six, so the engine doesn’t make much sense either.
The Charger should be a full Hellcat, and that seems to be the plan Dodge is executing. And Charger fans will eat it up, even when the car costs nearly $100,000.
While today’s Sixpack models are more entertaining than the Internet would have you believe, people miss the noise and fury of a true V8-powered model. If Dodge can keep the adjustable RWD/AWD powertrain for the Hellcat version, that would be even better. Then automakers will have true four-season muscle machines.
Motor Pickup1: It’s no secret that Dodge fans prefer V8s to EVs and six-cylinder powertrains. Although smaller electric and gas engine options are more efficient or produce more power. Adding the Hellcat Charger to the lineup should do more than appease the war-kids who bow at the altar of all things eight-cylinder.
Dodge sources say Hellcat development has begun. I suspect they started not long after the announcement of the straight-six, and the Charger Hellcat was already more advanced than when it launched.
