New BMW M5 Design: Renderings

Posted on

The current-generation BMW M5 has been around for a few years, using a 717-horsepower hybrid powertrain. It’s a supercar disguised as a sedan (or wagon) that will receive a facelift for the 2027 model year. However, it’s not just a light touch.

As seen in a spy video published on Carspotter Jeroen’s YouTube channel, the new BMW M5—which was tested at the Nürburgring—will differ substantially from the current model, adopting the new design direction seen on the latest iX3 and i3.

Influence of the Neue Klasse

The first change is visible at the front, where the new BMW M5 clearly resembles the new i3: a horizontally oriented double kidney grille that integrates lighting elements, as previewed in our renders. This isn’t a typical move for a facelift, but as mentioned, the 2027 BMW M5 will be very different from the current version. The same goes for the rear, where you can see two pairs of outboard exhaust tips.

The new BMW’s cabin is not shown in the video. But according to reports, there will be a major overhaul there too, with the implementation of Panoramic Vision—the new dashboard layout seen on the iX3 and i3—featuring a large center screen and a long, slim display positioned just below the windshield.

V8 Remains in Place

Spy footage of the 2027 BMW M5 leaves no doubt: under the hood will once again be a 4.4-liter V8 engine, paired with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the current generation, that setup produces 717 hp and 738 pound-feet of torque, figures that could be increased in the new M5—along with its electric range (currently 42 miles), thanks to the use of a higher-capacity battery.
