The Chevy Silverado HD is known for its impressive capabilities straight from the factory, but that hasn’t stopped enthusiasts from upping the ante with a series of modifications that further enhance this heavy-duty pickup. Now, one Australian builder is doing just that, offering a fully upgraded overland rig based on the Silverado 2500 HD.

The company behind the rig, Big Dog Builds, promises to deliver “American trucks the Aussie way,” and highlights its new Overlander in an in-depth feature video.

The Chevy Silverado HD is upgraded as an overlander rig.

Built as a long-haul touring truck, this particular Chevy Silverado HD started life as a standard NB1-spec vehicle before being comprehensively upgraded into a highly capable rig ready to traverse continents with confidence. Up front, the truck received a powerful transformation with a Toro bull bar paired with a 15,000-pound winch and an extensive lighting setup, integrating multiple spotlights, spotlights and multiple LED light bars.

Under the body, the suspension system was extensively reworked with a 3-inch lift kit combined with upgraded control arms, torque knob and Fox 2.5 remote reservoir shocks, providing better ground clearance and some adjustability as well. The addition of a triple airbag system with onboard air management allows the driver to adjust ride height and level the load quickly, which is especially useful when towing or tackling uneven terrain.

Rolling stock is just as serious, with the Chevy Silverado HD riding on 18-inch KMC forged wheels wrapped in 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. This new stance not only improves off-road capability, but also requires new body components, including color-matched fender flares, mud flaps, and a full coat of paint protection.

Other overlander upgrades include a Norweld tray and canopy system that turns the Silverado into a self-contained mobile basecamp. Inside, the setup includes a large drawer system, integrated storage solutions, a refrigerator, and a complete auxiliary power system powered by lithium batteries, solar panels, and power management hardware. A 210-litre long-range fuel tank significantly extends driving range, while an additional jerry can provides further reserve. On the roof, this Chevy Silverado HD sports a custom rack with a 200W solar panel, Starlink Mini connectivity, and even more lighting.
