Volkswagen ID.4: Dead—For Now

  • Volkswagen ends ID.4 production in Chattanooga.
  • This shift will make room for the 2027 Atlas.
  • The company promises a ‘future version of ID.4’ for North America.

The Volkswagen ID.4, as we know, is dead in the US. The company is ending production of electric SUVs at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, manufacturing facility to make room for higher-volume models. That said, this may not be the end of the line for the ID.4 nameplate.

According to VW, “a future version of the ID.4 is currently planned for the North American market.” While the German automaker hasn’t released any official details, the good news for fans of VW’s compact electric SUV is that a newer and better model is likely on the way.

The manufacturing shift in Chattanooga will make room for the 2027 Atlas, which debuted a few weeks ago at the New York Auto Show. This makes sense; The Atlas has been VW’s second best-selling model for the past three years, and the new version is expected to make an even bigger dent in the competitive three-row SUV space.

Meanwhile, the ID.4 is not selling very well. As Americans continue to look to electric vehicles, VW sold more than 22,000 units of the ID.4 in 2025. That represents an increase of 31 percent compared to 2024, but the figure is still a decline. By comparison, the company sold more than 71,000 Atlas units in the same period. As the company notes:

“The electric vehicle market continues to present challenges for the industry, requiring measured decisions over the past several years to address this uncertainty. As part of its focus on higher-volume products that meet market demand, Volkswagen will no longer assemble the ID.4 in Chattanooga starting mid-April 2026.”

As for the current ID.4, buyers can still get the 2026 model year electric SUV. Production will officially end in mid-April 2026, which means the 2026 model will remain in dealers until the end of the year.

Next ID.4 (Or ID. Tiguan?)

There have been reports (including on this website) that VW may ditch the ID.4 name entirely and call its next electric SUV the ID. Tiguan. CEO Thomas Schäfer said that the company wants to change its naming strategy and use more “well-known names” in the future. This latest news from VW suggests that the company may stick with the ID.4 name for the foreseeable future.

Whatever VW names its next electric SUV, don’t expect any dramatic changes from the current ID.4. Next ID.4/ID. The Tiguan will likely use the automaker’s latest MEB+ platform, which will deliver major efficiency and performance improvements over the current MEB architecture.

As VW adds more hard buttons to its vehicles, the next ID.4 will no doubt have a number of tactile controls in the cabin. Meanwhile, the exterior design isn’t much different from the current look, with subtle styling changes to bring the next ID.4 in line with the rest of the range.
