New Electric Porsche Cayenne S Hits the Hot Spot

  • Porsche expands its Cayenne Electric lineup with a third member.

  • It costs $128,650 including destination charge.

Porsche wants to emulate its Electric Cayenne range with its gas-powered counterpart. This is a strategy that the Tigers have implemented, and now its big brother is also following the same path. After the base and Turbo variants were released last November, the Cayenne without a combustion engine now adds a third member to slot between the existing versions.

The S still has dual motors and all-wheel drive, but its combined output is lowered to 536 horsepower. With launch control active, peak output increases to 657 hp. It may not be the king of the hill, but the electric Cayenne S takes just 3.6 seconds to hit 60 mph and tops out at 155 mph.

At the heart of the new variant is the same 113 kWh battery pack with 400 kW charging support. Provided you can find a suitable charging station with that amount of power, the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 16 minutes. You’ll need to use the DC charging port on the driver’s side, as the port on the passenger side is reserved for AC charging.

Zuffenhausen attempted to visually differentiate the electric Cayenne S by installing slightly different front and rear fascias, with some parts painted in Volcano Gray Metallic. In the United States, customers can choose from 13 colors and a variety of options. There’s Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and Active Ride suspension, not to mention ceramic-composite brakes and a Sport Chrono Package.

You’ll want the Sport Chrono Package to activate the push-to-pass function that delivers 120 hp for 10 seconds. There’s even a Track mode built in, although we can’t imagine many people bringing such a large and heavy electric SUV to the circuit. Debuting with the Cayenne S, but also available on other electric versions, is an Interior Styling Package with a two-tone black-and-green cabin to complement the Mystic Green paint job. Green accents extend to the doors, steering wheel and dashboard to complete the look.

Before options, the electric Cayenne S costs $128,650 including destination charge. That makes it $17,300 more expensive than the base model and significantly undercuts the Turbo by $36,700. Porsche will begin deliveries in the US in late summer.

Motorcycle Pickup1: It’s always good to have variety in the model range, and there will likely be even more for the electric Cayenne. For example, a coupe-style variant with a sloping roofline is a matter of when, not if, and this should reflect the product range Porsche offers for conventionally shaped SUVs.

It remains to be seen whether customers will start enjoying six-figure electric vehicles again, as the adoption of electric vehicles in the luxury segment is not something that high-end brands want. We wouldn’t hold our breath for a single-engine, rear-wheel-drive Cayenne priced under $100,000. For Porsche’s cheaper electric SUVs, the smaller base Macan, 4 trim, and 4S fall below that threshold.
