Porsche has filed a new patent for hidden racing stripes. The technology uses a film material, described by automakers as an electronic paper or paramagnetic coating, on a vehicle’s exterior that changes color when an electrical voltage is applied.

The patent shows several ways Porsche could use this technology, the most prominent of which is eliminating racing stripes. According to German submissionThe stripes can change color depending on the vehicle’s driving mode, such as green for eco or red for sport—or they can disappear altogether at the click of a button.

The images also show the use of film for the stripes behind the rear wheels and on the rear diffuser. The patent also describes the use of technology in electric vehicles to display the car’s charging status right on the outside.

It’s good technology, but not anything new. Automakers already use electrochromic glass that changes opacity as the electric current changes. This just takes the technology one step further.

Motorcycle Pickup1: Color-changing cars are not a new concept. BMW introduced the i Vision Dee concept with an E Ink exterior a few years ago, allowing the car to wear 32 different colors. Porsche’s patent shows how automakers can use color-changing exteriors in innovative and useful ways, going beyond pure aesthetics.
