After a long wait, the 2022 Honda Civic Type R is finally here. Unfortunately, the automaker didn’t tell us much about the mechanics of the new model. The company promises this is the “most powerful Type R ever,” but that only tells us that the horsepower figure is higher than 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts). However, we know what the new hot hatch looks like, so let’s see what the differences are between the latest and previous generations.
Face
The general theme of the styling of the new Civic Type R is that it is more understated and less eye-catching like the previous generation. This change starts at the front of the car.
The old CTR featured an aggressive front fascia with stacked inlets in the corners, large openings and a mesh grille. Red accents on the splitter add color to the body.
In contrast, the new CTR has a much smaller opening at the front. There is a larger body color section and a trapezoidal opening in the middle. Slender vertical inlets are at every corner.
The spoon occupies a place near the base of the windshield on the previous CTR. The new one also has an inlet, but it’s much smaller. Plus, the location is closer to the front end.
Raising
Both generations of the Civic Type R are five-door hatchbacks. However, the steep rear gives them more of a liftback aesthetic. The three-outlet exhaust emerging from the center is another common element.
As on the front, the previous-generation model has a more demeanor to me than the new one. It has small spoilers on each side of the roof, large wings, and mesh sections that protrude on each side of the lower bumper.
In comparison, the new CTR has a more refined look. There are still large wings, but not as grand as those on the previous model. The diffuser looks bigger, but without the large holes on each side of the bumper, the vehicle doesn’t look as aggressive as the previous generation.
What’s Inside the Count
Inside, the new Civic Type R adopts a cabin that’s a more aggressive version of what you’ll find in today’s standard Civic. This means there is a net on the dashboard and three knobs to control the HVAC system. The infotainment screen comes out from the middle of the dashboard.
In comparison, the previous generation CTR used modifications to the Civic of that era. Both vehicles have lots of red accents.
Future
The new Civic Type R will go on sale later this fall. We’ll receive details on power output, pricing, and other info closer to that time. According to rumors, this will be the last CTR without the help of a hybrid powertrain.
