It’s been almost two years since Ford announced it would cancel its three-row electric SUV. The company was supposed to launch a three-row SUV in 2025, but consumers are not buying electric vehicles as much as the company had hoped. Instead, the Dearborn-based automaker abandoned the project before its official debut, but it wasn’t completely lost.

Doug Field, Ford’s former EV chief, posted a photo of the model his LinkedIn page as the header image, which apparently has been around since last year. It shows the profile of a three-row SUV, which has a Genesis GV60-like front end, a very long sloping roof, and a truncated rear end reminiscent of the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe.

Ford first introduced this three-row SUV in May 2023. At the time, the company’s CEO, Jim Farley, called it a “personal bullet train,” and it was expected to have a range of more than 350 miles. Ford never provided more information about the EV before dropping the project.

The EV now serves as a “research vehicle” that “provides information” about the next generation of electric vehicles, a Ford spokesperson confirmed to Drive that the vehicle was a canceled three-row SUV.

Ford’s Switch to Hybrids

In late 2025, Ford announced a new strategy that would expand its hybrid offerings, with nearly every model featuring some type of multi-energy powertrain by the end of the decade. It was also revealed that the next generation F-150 Lightning will be an electric vehicle with extended range with an on-board generator.

This doesn’t mean Ford is ditching electric vehicles altogether—the automaker is switching to a new Universal EV platform designed to support several affordable models. The first is a midsize pickup, with an architecture flexible enough to accommodate a variety of body styles.

Ford says its new electric truck will go on sale sometime in 2027. That’s when we’ll find out how much impact the three-row SUV will have on Ford’s future.

Motorcycle Pickup1: Now that we know what the three-row would look like, we think Ford was right to cancel the vehicle. It looks like a pinched and rather plain Hyundai Ioniq 9.
