New Mercedes-AMG Black Series: Spy Video

  • The prototype was spotted on its way to the Nürburgring.
  • The next AMG Black Series is a special homologation for the GT3 racing car.
  • The brief suggests side exhausts, big tires, and large air vents.

Mercedes-AMG has been teasing its newest Black Series model for quite some time, but so far we’ve only seen a few photos from the Nürburgring. Now, a new spy video shows the coupe out on a public road, complete with the obligatory number plate. It makes you wonder how something this radical looking can be driven legally on the road.

It’s not just the wild aerodynamic body kit, with pop-out fender vents, that makes it stand out. The upcoming high-performance coupe appears to ride on the widest tires ever fitted to a production car. With 325 mm front and 355 mm rear Michelin Pilot Cup 2 R rubber wrapped around those center-lock wheels, it’s no surprise that AMG is calling it the “most extreme Black Series ever.”

It appears the rear window has been removed, although visibility would be minimal given the large rear wing. The prominent rear diffuser looks like it was lifted straight from the new GT3 race car, for which the Black Series serves as a homologation special. Unlike other versions of the AMG GT currently on sale, this one features a side-exit exhaust for the V8 engine which is believed to use a flat-plane crankshaft.

Seeing the new Black Series at the Nürburgring makes us wonder if Mercedes-AMG will eventually try hot laps. It already holds the record for fastest production car with the hypercar One, which clocked 6:29. After all, it doesn’t feel right if an F1-powered machine is dethroned by a much cheaper vehicle.

Even though the battle between the Ford Mustang GTD and the Chevy Corvette ZR1X is heating up, the AMG One doesn’t seem to have to worry about its “Lord of the ‘Ring” status. However, competition will be even tougher as the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will debut at the beginning of this year. They can beat the American duo and even come close to their domestic rivals.

Nürburgring lap times aside, the next Black Series looks absolutely insane and stinks on the famous track. This isn’t the only GT3 race car with a number plate in plain sight. Toyota has introduced the new GR GT, also packing a brawny V8 engine. Japan’s new supercar makes more than 641 horsepower from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo hybrid engine, but expect the Germans to beat it, considering the previous Black Series had 720 hp. The new GT2 RS will also likely join the 700+ hp club.

Motorcycle Pickup1: The new Black Series coming so soon after the last series is a welcome surprise for AMG. The four-cylinder C63 heralded an era of electrification and downsizing, but that didn’t go according to plan, so Affalterbach looks to return to a large-capacity combustion engine for a car that likely won’t share much with the standard AMG GT. The rumored Mythos CLE special edition will most likely get big power from a V8 engine.

Mercedes has been criticized for turning the GT into an SL coupe, but the next Black Series should address those concerns. It’s expected to be much lighter, shedding the grand-touring underpinnings and returning to full coupe performance.
