2027 BMW 7 Series Facelift: First Teaser

Posted on
 • The 7 Series will not switch to a new design language.
 • BMW’s updated flagship sedan still has split headlights flanking the large kidney grille.
 • The new infotainment technology will bring radical changes to the dashboard.

The new iX3 marks a radical design change for BMW, but we won’t see the fresh look on all BMW cars. Although most models from Munich will adopt the Neue Klasse aesthetic in the coming years, the 7 Series will not be one of them. The luxury sedan is getting a mid-cycle facelift, and judging by the teaser images, it will receive an evolutionary look.

BMW is giving us a glimpse of its updated flagship before the 2027 7 Series launches next month. We’ll see the Mercedes S-Class rival at the Beijing Auto Show, which seems fitting considering Chinese customers are still enamored with large sedans. Even though the car is mostly hidden in the shadows, it’s clear that the front design won’t change much compared to the current model, which has been around for about four years.

The LED contours on the grille make it clear that the XXL kidneys remain. This is an interesting decision considering the new i3 will look very different. The smaller electric sedan, and the next-generation 3 Series, will have a wide, flat grille that blends into the headlights. That’s clearly not the case here, as the 7 Series will retain the design elements that made this generation so controversial.

The top strip of LED DRL lights appears flatter than before and, once again, sits above the main headlamps. We haven’t seen the last of this striking layout, as the next-gen X7 arriving in 2027 will feature a similar look. BMW tends to be bolder in designing its largest vehicles, and we can easily add the XM to that group. The iX does not have separate headlights, but was the first SUV to feature a giant grille when it was launched in 2021.

While Mercedes says the facelifted S-Class is more than 50 percent new, BMW goes even further. The 2027 7 Series is “an almost completely new vehicle,” according to CEO Oliver Zipse. Entering the second half of its seventh generation, the 7er no longer has to worry about its two main rivals, as the Audi A8 and Lexus LS will be out soon.

The BMW boss claims the company is “elevating our luxury sedans to a completely new level in terms of both looks and technology.” However, the teaser image suggests that the exterior styling will not change much, but the cabin will undergo major changes. The iX3’s radical new interior will come to the 7 Series, possibly in top-end spec, given the car’s top-of-the-range status.

Motorcycle Pickup1: It’s a bit surprising to see BMW sticking with its previous design language, but then again, a completely new front fascia might be too expensive. Even without adopting the new face of the Series 3/i3, the company will still have to spend a huge amount of money on the update. Replacing the iDrive generation with a completely new setup for a mid-cycle facelift certainly isn’t cheap.

We’re very curious to see how the 7 Series will be pushed further into the high-end market for the revival of the ALPINA version. BMW aims to catch up to the Maybach S-Class without stepping on the Rolls-Royce Ghost’s toes. The Posher 7er is expected to follow later this year and will be based on the facelifted version.
