- Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann says the brand needs a ‘big touring car’.

- The new car will debut before the end of the decade.
Lamborghini has never had a large model lineup, but in just the last few years, its lineup has expanded. It’s been nearly a decade since the automaker added the Urus, its first high-powered SUV, and now the company’s CEO wants another type of product in his portfolio: a touring car.
In an interview with Roads & Tracks during last weekend’s 12 Hours of Sebring, Stephan Winkelmann, Lambo’s head honcho, said, “What’s missing is a grand touring car. A two-door 2+2.”

Winkelmann said he has no interest in adding an SUV or even a sedan to Lamborghini’s lineup. The brand’s first electric vehicle, the Lanzador, was supposed to be a two-door 2+2 grand tourer, but the automaker reportedly scrapped it. Even so, Lanzador can still swap its EV powertrain for a hybrid.
Last year, Winkelmann suggested that Lanzador might ditch its electric powertrain in favor of a plug-in hybrid due to changing market conditions. At that time, he said he was still very open about which powertrain the car would get. That decision has now been made, and a hybrid version will join Lamborghini’s lineup before the end of the decade.

Motorcycle Pickup1: It looks like Winkelmann is preparing to launch a new plug-in hybrid grand tourer, and is keeping an eye on the reaction. The brand had wanted a fourth model for a long time, and it seemed foolish to completely abandon development of the Lanzador because people wanted a different powertrain. It seems like a waste.
