For the 1966 model year, the Oldsmobile Toronado joined the Buick Riviera as part of General Motors’ front-wheel-drive E-Body platform. As the first American-made front-wheel-drive cars since the 1937 Cord, the Toronado and Riviera had flat floors with non-segmented footwells, allowing for three-abreast seating in the front and rear seats. The doors have door handles for both front and rear passengers, so rear passengers can get out without having to bother the front seat passengers. Designed as a personal luxury coupe, the Toronado’s styling lines resulted in a shorter overall height than the Chevy Corvair. Standard and optional equipment abounds, including power seats, power windows, head restraints, remote-controlled outside mirrors, cruise control, AM-FM stereo, power antenna, air conditioning, and a tilt-telescopic steering column.

What was unique about the Oldsmobile Toronado was the dashboard with a barrel speedometer that rotated vertically, unlike the wheel on a slot machine. To the left of the speedo, which is located in the middle, there is a temperature control and a wiper/washer control. Gauges are scattered across the dash.

Power for the Oldsmobile Toronado came from a 425-cube Super Rocket V8 that produced 385 horsepower and a whopping 475 pound-feet of torque. Power transferred to the front wheels is a heavy-duty Turbo Hydramatic three-speed automatic transmission. Firestone developed special tires with stiffer sidewalls called Toronado Front Drive, or TFDs. It comes with thin white walls and a unique tread pattern. With tires designed for the platform, the Toronado is capable of going from a standstill to sixty miles per hour in less than 7.5 seconds. Motor Trend magazine selected the Toronado as their 1966 Car of the Year.

Changes to the 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado included ventilated front disc brakes and a more compliant ride.

The front-wheel-drive Eldo is powered by Cadillac’s 429 cubic inch V8 backed by a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic 425 automatic transmission. Styling was sharper, more angular, with a rear end design lifted from the GM-X Stiletto shown at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The new Eldorado sold quickly, selling only 18,000 copies.

A new powerplant would motivate the 1968 Cadillac Eldorado, with the Caddy 472 replacing the 429. The 472 produced 375 horsepower and 525 pound-feet of torque. The 1968 Eldo’s final drive ratio dropped from 3.21 to 3.07. Mileage is 10 mpg city, 13 mpg highway. The length of the hood is 4.5 inches longer to hide the windshield wipers.
