Porsche just announced a big electric SUV and put the finishing touches on the Macan EV, but that doesn’t mean the traditional sports car is being abandoned. Next month, the cover will come from the new 911 GT3 RS, a true track star with its naturally aspirated flat-six engine and all the downforce belonging to some wild aero. A new spy video shows the rear-wheel drive engine in its natural elements – at the Nürburgring.
Nearly four minutes in, this montage features several prototypes at full speed around the Nordschleife. Eagle-eyed readers will notice Porsche is testing two different types of rear wings, one more impressive than the other. Looks like the guys from Zuffenhausen didn’t even bother applying camouflage unless there was body-colored tape to hide the finer details. It’s hard to miss the extreme cooling solution, giant brakes and extreme 911 wide hips.

From some of the details released by Porsche, we know that the GT3 RS will retain the high-speed six-cylinder boxer engine. It will produce “approximately 500 PS,” which makes 493 horsepower. That’s highly unlikely to be the last number considering the non-RS version packs 502 hp. A small bulge in output for the new king of the hill seems reasonable or should at least match its lesser sibling. As for torque, look for somewhere in the region of 346 pound-feet (469 Newton-meters).
It’s likely the RennSport derivative will be a PDK-only affair, providing lightning-fast gear changes for stellar track performance. Andreas Preuninger, the Porsche man in charge of the GT car, says the focus is on aerodynamics and chassis because the engine is quite ready for the job. Some of the weight-saving measures on the regular 911 GT3 may have been implemented to further improve track performance.
The RS debuted on August 17th and will be the new flagship model in the 911 lineup, which is sure to be expanded in the following years with the first-ever hybrid. Before the electrified version arrives, Porsche is ready to launch the Dakar/Safari model and we may also get another GT2 RS in the future.
