Arctic trucks have become famous for making hardcore rigs for equally extreme purposes. However, the Icelandic company faced challenges during its Antarctic expedition in 2008.
To answer this challenge, Arctic Trucks built a rig from the Toyota Hilux. This is an AT44 rig, named after the company and the tires it uses, but instead of having just four axles, the company added a third for various reasons.
Known as the Hilux AT44 6×6, a monster truck built for the extreme has been featured by Ridiculous Rides by Barcroft Cars on Youtube.
To build the Hilux AT44 6×6, Arctic Trucks had to disassemble the Toyota Hilux. About 80 percent of the frame was replaced with stronger materials, while 20 percent was entirely rebuilt – both to strengthen the chassis and add personality to the truck. Approximately 500 hours were spent modifying the rig, which included processes to strengthen the suspension and increase the off-road machine’s center of gravity. As you know, the lower the center of gravity, the better off-roading.
The Hilux AT44 6×6 is powered by a 3.0 liter diesel engine modified to consume jet fuel. This ensures that the fuel is still going strong down to a very low temperature of -45 degrees Fahrenheit (-43 degrees Celsius).
The reach of the truck was also extended. It has a 750 liter fuel tank, while the truck itself can carry up to 1,400 liter barrels of fuel. Of course, this monster truck is equipped with a set of 44-inch tires with soft sidewalls, useful when teams need to deflate tires for better traction.
As to why the decision to convert the Hilux to a 6×6, Arctic Trucks said that with six wheels in action, you have more traction and more buoyancy, plus you can carry more and go steeper.
Arctic Trucks doesn’t announce the price of the Toyota Hilux AT44 6×6 on its website, but the video above shows that it costs $275,000.
