Rolls-Royce Specter Hits French Riviera For Suspension Testing

The Rolls-Royce Specter will not start reaching customers until the fourth quarter of next year. That left the automaker with plenty of time to perfect the engine, which Rolls continued to do. The battery-electric vehicle is in the next stage of development after completing cold-weather testing earlier this year. The new Rolls are now being tested on the French Riviera, where the EV will complete 625,000 kilometers (388,356 miles) of testing.

We got the chance to drive the Specter earlier this year when Rolls claimed the car was about 25 percent finished. That’s increased to about 40 percent, meaning there’s still a lot of work left, but the company has made some progress. Rolls-Royce has been able to reduce the Specter’s drag coefficient from 0.26 to 0.25, which continues to make it Rolls’ most aerodynamic model.

Rolls took the car to France to test its new electronic roll stabilization hardware that can separate the anti-roll bars on a straight road and reattach them when the Satellite Assisted Navigation system detects an impending bend. This system will help ensure the new Specter delivers the company’s “magic carpet ride.”

The new Rolls will use the automaker’s Luxury Architecture, which also underpins the new Cullinan and Phantom. This platform gives Specter the most rigid corporate body in its history. Rolls reinforce the platform with steel sections, with doors measuring nearly 4.9 feet (1.5 meters), which is also the longest Rolls ever built for a vehicle. The car will also feature an electric architecture capable of processing more data than standard Rolls.

Rolls hasn’t detailed the powertrain and likely won’t until the car is further in development. There’s still a lot left, with the Specter still needing to complete a million km (621,000 miles) of testing before reaching its 2.6 million (1.6 million) goal. With the car’s development only 40 percent complete, a lot could change before it’s officially announced.
