COVID-19 and global supply chain problems have left many automakers unprepared and making it difficult for them to move forward. The entire auto industry is experiencing unprecedented hassles in producing and shipping vehicles, and it seems the same can be said about the recreational vehicle (RV) sector. We are now sad to report that one of the most recognizable names in the RV industry is no longer active.
RV trip reported that longtime RV maker Lazy Daze closed its operations a few months ago. There is no official announcement from the company, although the official website is no longer working. The publication even contacted Lazy Daze for more information but the phone “went from unanswered to non-working.” RV triphowever, managed to contact Lazy Daze service manager.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t provide more details, but at the very least, Todd Miller confirmed that the company is currently not operating. “Sorry, but the owner’s situation is not conducive to providing interviews or information about closings.” The reason for the closure, however, remains a mystery for now.
Different theories were discussed in the Facebook group for Lazy Daze, obviously, none of them are based on actual facts. To us, the most credible advice seems to be that the pandemic and following supply line issues do not allow the company to continue its existence. Some people said on social media that the RV manufacturer couldn’t get enough chassis assemblies to continue production, which also sounds plausible.
Whatever the case, we know the RV sector is currently booming and the lack of customer demand is likely not the reason for Lazy Daze’s shutdown. For example, in April this year, Winnebago, one of the largest manufacturers in the industry, announced it had $4.37 billion in deposits. This backlog includes all orders received from dealers that have generally been asked to ship within the next six months.
As a final note, the Lazy Daze is known in the market for its very high quality campers and RVs. The company began life as a side project of two high school shopteachers, Paul Newton and Harold Hamm, who experimented with camper vans on their own backs in the mid-1950s.
