Honda Civic Type R Plug-In Hybrid Is Not Excluded On This Platform

Honda unveiled the new Civic Type R last week with a tried and tested hot hatch formula combining a turbocharged petrol engine with a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. Thus ending rumors claiming the FL5 model will be a hybrid and even adopt AWD. However, there may be some truth in the report, at least when it comes to electric powertrains.

Talk with Autocar, Honda Motor Europe technical adviser Ko Yamamoto said the Civic Type R platform could support electrification. While he ruled out the possibility of an electric CTR entirely based on the current platform, he left the door slightly open for further hybrid setups:

“I will not exclude electrification. We can’t do a pure electric powertrain on this platform, but I imagine it can take up to a certain degree of plug-in hybrid. Electrification is just another technical measure, like VTEC or turbo. , or multi-link suspension.”

Asked if an all-wheel-drive CTR was on the cards, Ko Yamamoto said it was definitely not on the agenda. While it’s technically possible because the car shares a platform with the CR-V, the technical advisers see no benefit: “It’s not even necessarily faster, it’s heavier.”

In related news, new videos (attached below) has appeared with rival VW Golf GTI Clubsport, showing a pre-production prototype painted in Rallye Red. It is one of five exterior colors available, along with Historic Championship White, Crystal Black Pearl, Boost Blue, and Sonic Gray Pearl.

Intel’s latest shows the 2.0-liter petrol engine makes 10 hp and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm) more than before while the optional carbon fiber wing trims 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) on the JDM-spec Civic Type R. As you may have heard, Honda installed smaller wheels but with wider tires using a 19-inch set wrapped in 265/30 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

There’s still a lot of technical specs we don’t know yet, and we can say the same about important pricing info. Honda will clear up the mystery in the coming months when the 2023 Civic Type R goes on sale in the United States this fall.
