Our spy photographer caught the next-generation BMW X3 being tested earlier this month, but the automaker hid the design with camouflage and cladding. New rendering of Kolesa.ru get rid of that cover in an attempt to preview the crossover’s redesign style.
The unofficial renders peel back the camouflage to reveal a familiar-looking crossover with different design changes. While the test vehicle sported a camo and cladding to hide its new look, it seems BMW hasn’t deviated much from the crossover’s current design. Instead, it looks like an evolutionary change that gives the crossover new front and rear fascia and other styling updates.
At the front, renderings feature a new grille flanked by slimmer headlights that sit under the new hood. Underneath all of that is a reshaped front bumper that’s much more aggressive than the current face. At the rear, there is a new rear bumper and slimmer taillights.
One thing rendering can’t convey is the size of the crossover. The spy shots make it appear as if the new X3 could be bigger than the current model; however, we need to take a tape measure to be sure. Another area that remains a mystery is the interior, which our spy photographers weren’t able to capture, although we’d expect BMW to install the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system and dashboard screen, similar to what’s on offer in the new iX.
It’s too early to know about the powertrains, as we don’t expect BMW to reveal the new X3 as early as next year. BMW will likely offer a range of gas, diesel, and electric powertrains, including the all-electric iX3. We knew BMW would be offering the M40i trim when spy shots revealed a crossover with the quad exhaust tips poking out the back.
BMW is updating the X3 for the 2022 model year, so we don’t believe that the debut for the next-generation model is imminent. That could be more than a year before the reveal, and BMW might even push its debut into early 2024. We might not see the new X3 in US showrooms until the 2025 model year.
