Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Refresh Spied Previews Updated Small Crossover

The current iteration of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class has just arrived for the 2021 model year, and the brand already has a light refresh in development. The example in this spy shot uses a minimal camo.

The GLA-Class has a reshaped grille with more of an oval shape than the current trapezoid shape. The revised headlights appear more rounded. The front fascia is under the toughest camouflage, but the area appears to have a more angular style than the existing vehicle.

Oddly enough, the latest GLA-Class we saw (gallery below) had a different grille than this one. The vehicle has an opening with a more trapezoidal shape for the outline. Also, the rear bumper trim around the taillights lacks the metallic surround of the crossover in the latest images. One explanation for this is that we may see a different trim level of the upcoming model

On the other hand, the GLA-Class hasn’t changed at all. We can’t rule out the possibility that Mercedes offers several different wheel designs.

At the back, the only strip of camouflage runs the width of the back. It’s hard to tell if there’s been a change in the shape of the headlights, but the layout of the lights inside looks different.

If the GLA-Class follows the changes we saw on the A-Class, then there could be slight changes to the cabin. Revisions such as a new steering wheel and infotainment screen bezels. It should also be running the latest MBUX software.

The powertrain revision remains a mystery. Depending on the market, GLA-Class buyers already have many choices. There is a standard model, a high-performance AMG variant, and a plug-in hybrid. There’s even a fully electric EQA crossover.

In the United States, Mercedes is reportedly planning to discontinue the A-Class in 2022 and the CLA-Class in 2023. This leaves the GLA as the entry-level offering in the country. The car manufacturer allegedly wants to move to the upper class. Selling three smaller models that share the same platform and powertrain doesn’t fit this plan.

Outside the US, Mercedes is reportedly working on a model that is smaller than its compact offering. They will include small hatchbacks and crossovers. Both may be EVs.
