Restomod is a relatively new word that comes from the combination of the words restoration and modification. At its core, it’s a tuning genre with a philosophy that seeks to keep the vehicle’s look original, but also combines it with modern drivetrains, technologies and materials. In this way, the engine looks vintage but offers driving characteristics comparable to modern vehicles.
One of the most famous players in the aftermarket segment in the United States is Retro Designs which is located in North Carolina. Led by classic car specialist Daniel Valjevac, the tuning studio has a brand new tuning project priced at $350,000. It’s based on the 1954 Bel Air and looks absolutely phenomenal from every angle.

It’s a bit surprising to see a full-scale restomod project based on the 1954 Bel Air since most tuners use the 1955-1957 model. Valjevac, however, explains Retro Design wanted to bring back a coupe from the first-generation Bel Air and that’s why the team took this 1954 example. The goal is for the original design to be preserved with a “sharp, sharp restoration” with subtle re-engineering.

The plant is equipped with a special cold air intake system and ATI 9.17 lower pulley and counterweight. An 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission by General Motors is fitted for smooth gearshifts. Stopping power is provided by four disc brakes hidden behind special Boze wheels with custom-built wheelbases.
The vehicle sits on a special chassis equipped with air suspension for a lower ride height. Further adding to the unique low-slung position are the wheels, measuring 245/35/20 at the front axle and 345/30/20 at the rear. Making sure the exhaust pipe doesn’t scratch the road is a special exhaust system with oval pipe linings.
