Like most subcompact crossovers, the Skoda Kamiq isn’t a very attractive car. Well, students from the Czech automaker’s vocational school have tackled that by developing the Afriq as a concept designed to go where the Kamiq has never been before. While the production version is sold exclusively with front-wheel drive like all MQB A0-based models from the VW Group, the one-off vehicle comes with AWD borrowed from Octavia.
Skoda’s most popular car also lends itself to a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine with 190 horsepower and 320 Newton-meters (235 pound-feet) of torque sent to both axles via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The students had to modify the exhaust after installing the new engine and replacing the underbody. In addition, the Afriq is upgraded to an independent multi-link rear suspension.

One noticeable change compared to the Kamiq that you’ll find at a Skoda dealer is the two-door body style. Yes, the rear door has been welded and connected directly to the roll cage to strengthen the body. The concept livery is derived from the Fabia Rally2 evo, which also served as inspiration for the roof-mounted vent covers, rear spoiler and additional headlights at the front.
The stripped-down interior with a fire extinguisher and two bucket seats also follows the Fabia rally car using the same camera as the microphone. Skoda’s skilled apprentices equip Afriq with a navigation system mounted on the passenger side of the dashboard while the steering wheel and six-point seat belts are from the spirited supermini. The Dash itself is adapted from Fabia Rally2 evo.
The Israeli company Watergen has developed a drinking water generator that has been installed in the rear compartment. The device extracts drinking water from the humidity in the ambient air in a four-step process. Initially, the fan sucks in air and then the built-in filter removes dirt and dust before the pure air is sent through the heat exchanger where it condenses the water.
The next step is to push the water through a cascade filter to make it purer while UV rays destroy microorganisms and break down harmful chemicals. Once completely clean, the water is kept in a container that circulates continuously and UV light is used again to remove any remaining viruses and bacteria.
Weighing just 1,350 kilograms (2,976 pounds), the Afriq with 15-inch green OZ Racing wheels is the eighth Skoda Student Concept Car.
