The sun is setting on another small three-door hatchback in Europe. Ford ended production of the simpler Fiesta this summer, although the five-door version will continue. However, it will undergo some changes amid ongoing supply chain issues and buyers wanting a small crossover rather than a subcompact hatchback.
Talk to Motor1.comA Ford Germany spokesperson confirmed the cancellation of the three-door while offering a bit more insight into the overall situation.
“For the model year changes, Ford is simplifying and streamlining the delivery range. The goal is to adapt the range to customer demands – therefore, less popular body variants will be excluded from the program.”

The exact nature of downsizing is not readily apparent. European Automotive News mentions certain new Fiesta order restrictions due to the number of orders currently in the system. Some dealers in the UK have stopped taking orders for the car with certain options, and orders for the three-door Fiesta ST have ended altogether. Fear not, hot hatchback fans, because the ST will survive in the five-door format.
However, there may be some fear for the Fiesta’s long-term prospects. The subcompact just received a facelift for the 2022 model year, but the sale Street down in the first two months of 2022. Only 7,608 units were sold compared to 19,844 for the same period last year, although supply chain issues may explain part of that. For now, production will resume at Ford’s plant in Cologne, Germany, where it will share production space with upcoming electric models using Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
The 2022 update sees the Fiesta get standard edition LED headlights, with optional matrix LEDs available at higher trim levels. The slightly larger grille with larger vents in the lower fascia stands out as a major visual change, although the Fiesta retains its signature look in the segment.
2022 marks the end of the three-door Fiesta after 46 years of running. But to Ford’s credit, it outlasted nearly all of its rivals.
