Manual GR Supra Officially Teased To Show Toyota Gives A Shift

“Is that a Supra?” Not just any Supra, but one with a clutch pedal. Indeed, after years of rumors, Toyota has finally confirmed the rear-wheel drive coupe will get a manual gearbox. The do-it-yourself transmission is labeled as an “all new, custom made” box, indicating that it wasn’t borrowed from a BMW dumpster. That’s not too surprising since M Performance cars with the “40i” ending all have automatics.

In addition to showing the three-pedal box, Toyota revealed the back of the car where the lettering “Supra” is finished in red. A striking logo will be provided for the version equipped with a manual gearbox. Additional details will be revealed in the coming weeks, and in the meantime, the company ended its brief press release with the hashtag #savethemanual.

If the rumors are to be believed, the world premiere is scheduled to take place on April 28 when the Gazoo Racing Supra with shift stick will open. It will allegedly be offered exclusively with a six-cylinder engine, which may deprive the automatic-only BMW Z4 M40i of sales. The Bavarians do offer a manual for their sporty roadster, but only for a lower version with a four-cylinder engine.

Domestically in Japan, Toyota is reportedly planning to sell the Matte White Edition with bespoke body paint and a tan leather interior. Meanwhile, the teaser released today is from the company’s European division, thus revealing the three-pedal GR Supra destined for the Old Continent. We expect the sports car to land in the United States as well where it will join the GR Corolla hot hatch.

As to whether BMW is planning its own Z4 M40i manual, we don’t have high hopes yet. The Toyota Supra looks more like a sports car while its sister model has a GT profile which makes more sense automatically. This isn’t the end of the world considering that the M2 is just a few months away, complete with 6MT.
