For four decades, the Ford Nugget has championed the idea of driving freedom in Europe, evolving from a practical, Transit-based convertible into a favorite among van enthusiasts. The story begins in 1986, when Ford teamed up with specialist Westfalia to bring the first Nugget to market.
Ford’s goal at the time was revolutionary: to create a vehicle that was compact enough for everyday life, yet fully equipped to go outdoors when needed. With its signature aft galley and flexible sleeping arrangements in a high-top or pop-top, the original Nugget laid the foundation for a loyal community—many owners racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on their vans.
A major step forward occurred at the turn of the millennium in 2000. Based on the fourth generation Transit, an innovative two-zone concept was introduced. By moving the kitchen to the center, Ford created the still popular L-shaped layout, allowing one traveler to prepare breakfast while another slept undisturbed.

This clever use of space quickly became Nugget’s signature and the heart of her living room. With the Transit Custom in 2013, Ford then expanded the Nugget’s range internationally. The camper was a global success and provided more car-like ride comfort, helping to make long trips across Europe feel relaxing.
In the following years, the Nugget family continued to grow along with the expectations of its fans. While the “Big Nugget” of 2019 defined camping comfort with its own bathroom, the Active and Trail versions introduced in 2021 add a tougher, more rugged character. They’re designed for adventurers who don’t want to stop at muddy festival venues or remote beaches.

The fifth generation launching in 2023 marks the transition to the modern era: with plug-in hybrid power and available all-wheel drive, the Nugget is now more versatile than ever, without losing its core identity as a comfortable “home on the road”.

The big anniversary of 2026 closes this 40-year success story with a special highlight. The retro-themed limited special edition revives the iconic black-and-white design of the original. Paired with touches of modern luxury such as elegant yacht-style flooring, this model bridges nostalgia with future travel.
Even after four decades, the Nugget remains what it was intended to be from the start: a reliable companion for anyone pursuing adventure—while keeping their home in the rearview mirror.
