General Motors has announced a major milestone for Super Cruise, its semi-autonomous driver assistance technology, with GM customers collectively driving more than one billion hands-free miles using the Super Cruise system.
This achievement was made possible thanks to the approximately 750,000 GM vehicles on North American roads currently equipped with Super Cruise. General Motors said that data generated from actual mileage now plays a critical role in improving the system while supporting the automaker’s development of future autonomous driving technology.

As previously announced, the automaker plans to expand the capabilities of its self-driving technology even further, including introducing a new “eyes-off” driving feature that will debut on the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028. Super Cruise is currently available on 23 different GM North American nameplates, including the more accessible 2027 Chevy Bolt.
Recent usage statistics highlight how often drivers are using Super Cruise once it is available. Over the past year, customers used hands-free technology for approximately 7.1 million hours across 28.7 million trips, and on average, each trip included approximately 24 minutes of hands-free driving. Engagement levels remain high, with more than half of users activating the system every week, while around 85 percent use it at least once per month. The number of subscriptions is projected to exceed 850,000 by the end of this year, with a renewal rate of between 30 and 40 percent after the initial three-year period.

The system has been exposed to a variety of real-world driving conditions, including varying weather, traffic scenarios and driver behavior. GM leverages this data to improve system performance and reliability, providing insight into next-generation system development.
GM says it is now conducting supervised testing of more advanced automated driving technology on public highways in California and Michigan, with more than 200 test vehicles working toward that goal. As GM Authority discussed late last month, GM is now seeing its connected services starting to bear fruit, with OnStar and Super Cruise subscriptions quickly becoming a cornerstone of the automaker’s profitability.
