GM Canada Sold More EVs Than Tesla Again In Q1 2026

General Motors continues to dominate the Canadian electric vehicle market. In the first quarter of 2026, GM Canada managed to outsell all its competitors in terms of electric vehicle volume, extending the lead it first achieved in 2025 and strengthening its position ahead of Tesla in the region.

The automaker reported a 13.1 percent year-over-year increase in electric vehicle sales, driven by product diversity and increased interest from first-time electric vehicle buyers. The company now controls nearly 20 per cent of Canada’s electric vehicle market, according to S&P Global Mobility registration data through March. This performance reflects a deliberate strategy: offering more vehicles in more segments than any other competitor.

“GM Canada remains the electric vehicle sales leader in the country as we attract new customers with the broadest lineup of electric vehicles in Canada,” said Shane Peever, vice president of sales and marketing for GM Canada. He added that federal incentives have improved affordability, saying they “make electric vehicles more affordable.”

The breadth of this is visible across the portfolio. Chevy addresses the mainstream market with models like the Bolt and Equinox EV, both of which qualify for federal incentives under the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program. Cadillac is a mainstay in the luxury segment, with a market share of 50.6 percent in Q1. The Cadillac Optiq was ranked the best-selling luxury EV in Canada, followed by the Lyriq and Vistiq in second and third place respectively.

At the high end, General Motors continues to develop full-size electric trucks with the Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EV. These vehicles expand the target market beyond compact crossovers and into segments that typically have high margins.

The company now offers 13 EV models at Chevy, Cadillac and GMC in Canada. The scale appears to be a decisive advantage. While Tesla still dominates globally, GM’s local strategy – which focuses on pricing tiers, incentives and segment coverage – has proven effective in the north.

Q1 results show that execution, not just technology, will determine EV leadership in a given market. General Motors, for now, has aligned the two.
