The new body-on-frame GMC Jimmy looks to be back in play, with GM shifting gears to bring the Jimmy back after plans to relaunch the nameplate were initially scrapped.
As regular readers will no doubt remember, GM Authority reported several years ago that General Motors was working on a new midsize SUV that would bear the Jimmy name, but ultimately dropped the project in favor of other priorities. Now, GM Authority is pleased to report that The General is once again exploring a revival of the iconic nameplate.

As a quick refresher, GM originally began development of the modern GMC Jimmy several years ago, envisioning a modern body-on-frame SUV designed to compete directly with vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler. However, the program was ultimately canceled as the automaker turned to electrification amid tightening emissions and fuel economy regulations.
During the early development stages, the GMC Jimmy was described internally as a “bold” and “capable” car, with plans even including a V8 engine option. Now, the loosening of emissions and fuel economy regulations implemented by the Trump administration has changed the situation GM Authority Sources tell us that GM is reassessing its previously shelved GMC Jimmy plans, including the possibility of a V8 powerplant.

While details are still hard to come by, the revived GMC Jimmy could benefit from GM’s new Gen 6 Small Block V8 engine family, which is already rolling out in the new 2027 Corvette and next-generation 2027 Chevy Silverado and the upcoming 2027 GMC Sierra.
The business case for the GMC Jimmy also remains clear, because unlike Chevrolet, which offers the Blazer (albeit in crossover form), GMC doesn’t currently have a dedicated midsize SUV. With the increasing size of the latest generation Acadia, a gap has opened up in GMC’s product lineup. The new Jimmy could slot neatly into that space, offering a more rugged, adventure-focused alternative while broadening the brand’s appeal.

If given the green light, the new Jimmy will enter a hotly contested segment and continue to gain traction among buyers looking for a combination of capability and lifestyle appeal. However, GM Authority will be there to report all the latest news, so keep it locked here.
