The mass death of electric vehicles in the US continues. Following decisions by Acura, Hyundai, Kia and others, Volvo joins the list of manufacturers pulling back from certain EV models. The company is discontinuing its entry-level EX30 electric SUV in the US after just a few years on the market.

The Volvo EX30 makes its global debut in 2023 but doesn’t arrive in the US until late 2024 for the 2025 model year. Despite its short-lived presence, Volvo has decided to end sales of the model, citing “shifting market conditions and financial factors,” according to a statement provided to Drive.

Dealers in the US reportedly have until March 20, 2026 to place final orders for the EX30 and its Cross Country variant. Although the EX30 will be discontinued from the US lineup, Volvo’s other electric models will continue, including the upcoming Volvo EX90 and EX60, which are scheduled to debut in the US later this year. Meanwhile the EX30 will continue to be sold in international markets, including Canada and Mexico.

This news comes shortly after Volvo recalled more than 40,000 EX30 models due to a potential battery fire risk. Reports indicate that the model’s battery can overheat, requiring safety precautions.

In a statement to Motor1Volvo noted that the decision does not change the company’s electrification strategy. “Volvo Cars’ commitment to electrification and our customers remains unchanged,” the company said. “We look forward to continuing to bring exciting new electrification options to our customers in the US, including the All New EX60 and upgraded EX90.”

The EX30’s short tenure in the US highlights the challenges automakers face in the rapidly changing electric vehicle market, where consumer demand, regulatory pressure and safety considerations continue to change the industry landscape.
