‘A Lot of People Are Asking for Sedans.’

Tired of crossovers and SUVs? The good news is, things may be turning around. According to Ralph Gilles, chief design officer of Stellantis, more and more people are asking for sedans. And it’s about time.

In an interview with Car Design News (subscription required), Gilles said he was “tired” of SUVs and, for him, “the SUV craze has come and gone.” Stellantis currently sells two sedans in the United States — the Dodge Charger and the Alfa Romeo Giulia. According to Gilles:

‘Many people are asking for sedans. Young designers wanted a hatchback car like the GTI of the 1980s. They want a personal car that is fun to drive and easy to park. This made us rethink various form factors.”

Despite sedans’ doom and gloom, there are still plenty of options for sale in the United States, especially in the premium and luxury segments. Affordable options are harder to find.

Another indication that the crossover craze may be coming to an end: teenagers. Recently increase survey, 51 percent of teen respondents said they envisioned themselves driving a sedan someday. That compares with 31 percent who believe they will choose an SUV and 14 percent who want a truck.

Many of today’s teens grew up in families that owned crossovers and SUVs, and, like previous generations, they don’t want to be like their parents, so the switch to sedans makes sense. Station wagons and minivans faced similar reactions.

Motorcycle Pickup1: We hope this new demand results in a sedan that people can actually afford. Crossovers and SUVs have dominated the market for decades, so it’s no surprise that young buyers want to be different.
