A little over four years ago, BMW set the record for longest vehicle drift after sideways on the M5 for 232.5 miles (374.17 kilometers). It had to be refueled in the middle of a drift by another M5 to keep it going for eight hours. Impressive, right? Well, the Russian man Evghenii Novokşonov might have a dissenting opinion after orchestrating his own stunt with his trusty VAZ-2106.
A sedan too, though far less impressive than the Bavarian prime mover, his family car of Soviet origin had to be modified in an attempt to dethrone the M5. Instead of being refueled by the same vehicle, the VAZ-2106 is equipped with an extra gas tank capable of storing 200 liters (nearly 53 gallons), on top of the original 40 liter (10.5 gallon) tank. A fuel pump must also be installed to connect the two tanks.
As mentioned by the Moldavian site autoblog.md, a long drift attempt took place on the frozen lake Kald in the Chelyabinsk region, the seventh largest city in Russia and the second largest city in the Ural Federal District. In an event streamed live on YouTube that takes place on a specially crafted surface, Evghenii does a spree drifting no less than 273.2 miles (439.8 kilometers).
As a result, he unofficially surpassed BMW Performance Driving School instructor Johan Schwart and his M5. As a refresher, the official record-breaking drift run took place in December 2017 on a wet skidpad at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina. That said, Evghenii needed more time because his marathon lasted 17 hours and 34 minutes, from 10 a.m. to about 4 a.m. the next day.
Car radiator failed at 16th hours of what must have been a grueling run, but he continued to run for 90 minutes or so before finally deciding to stop. Due to sanctions against Russia, it was impossible for him to register his record with Guinness. That said, he collected donations during a live stream to apply for the Russian Notebook.
He needs $1,500 to pay the fees, and already has half of the money from donations and hopes sponsors will provide the remaining half. We sincerely wish him good luck, and hopefully, Guinness will call him soon.
