Buying a new car certainly has its advantages, but there are also disadvantages to consider before taking the plunge. Apart from having to deal with depreciation, you are also stuck in honoring the mail maintenance schedule. Otherwise, you’ll end up like this poor guy from Ontario. He had learned his lesson the hard way after failing to change the oil on time, which consequently voided the warranty.
Meet Musa Fosuo. He bought a new 2018 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel bundled with a 100,000 kilometer (62,000 mile) warranty. When the truck’s engine suddenly died, the odometer showed 91,000 kilometers (56,544 miles). Until then, it was a reliable vehicle and a perfect fit for a family man with two kids and a dog.
An electrician from Bowmanville, Fosuo contacted the dealer to discuss his unforeseen predicament. Little did he know, the warranty was no longer valid after losing the oil change specified in the documentation that came with the truck. In an interview with Toronto CTV Newshe describes his predicament:
“They told me the engine was no longer working and I wanted to replace the engine. When I asked them why it wasn’t covered under warranty they mentioned at 50,000 kilometers. [31,068 miles] the oil switch came on and I didn’t change the oil right away.”
He did change the engine oil, but the service was handled by a third party shop. That’s where Fosuo was told he could use his EcoDiesel pickup for 24,000 kilometers (14,913 kilometers) before having to change the oil again. The truck owner explains his Ram doesn’t come with a physical owner’s manual because it’s built into the infotainment system. He didn’t check it, so he didn’t know that he was supposed to change the oil once every 16,000 km (9,942 miles) or 12 months, whichever came first.
When contacted by Toronto CTV Newsa spokesperson for parent company Ram Stellantis said:
“Our authorized Ram dealer reports that such maintenance was not performed on these parameters. We do not hesitate to comply with the terms of the warranty, as long as they apply to manufacturing defects. Damage or failure caused by other sources is the responsibility of the owner.”
As a result, Fosuo now has to pay for the machine replacement out of his own pocket. It will cost 19,000 CAD (plus tax), which is about 15,000 USD. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the money to fix it and says the truck will most likely be thrown away.
If there’s a lesson to be learned, it’s that buying a new car comes with a series of responsibilities that you must handle if you want a valid warranty.
