General Motors patents exciting technology which will turn the vehicle into a video game controller. If technology has ever seen production, it can make your commute to work that much more enjoyable by turning the drive into a virtual reality version of Forza Horizon.
The patent documentation describes several applications of this idea. In one of them, the user will activate the game while driving, and various vehicle sensors will combine their data to create a virtual representation of the surrounding environment. The display can be an in-car screen, virtual reality glasses, or augmented reality, according to the company’s concept.
Submission mainly focuses on using the steering wheel and pedals to control the cars in the game. Although, one section says that a game controller or joystick will also work, suggesting that passengers might as well be able to play.
The weather sensor will add another layer of realism to the game. If it rains in real life, you will see this in cyberspace too. One of the odd elements in the patent is that if you play on a very hot day, the world will seem to melt. Similarly, things can look frozen on a very cold day.
Another application of this technology will work while the car is parked. In this case, the driver will activate the game, and then play it using the steering wheel and pedals as control inputs. The result is that a vehicle that supports this feature will double as a virtual driving cockpit.
The GM patent doesn’t say how the company intends to use this technology in the real world. Having people play video games while driving can be dangerous for other people on the road. Tesla briefly let passengers use its Passenger Play function while the vehicle was in transit, but NHTSA forced the company to make the feature only work when parked.
