The BMW 1 Series is not available in the US, but is an essential vehicle for the luxury brand in other parts of the world. That’s why BMW gave it a thorough facelift as part of its mid-cycle refresh. We got the first spy shots of the redesigned hatchback, which suggest that the car will receive a new fascia and other visual enhancements.
The photos show the five doors fully covered in camouflage, which does a stellar job of distorting the car’s design. However, there are some parts that penetrate. The headlights appear to have a new shape, which looks rounder and slimmer than the current model. The Camo also hides the grille, though we don’t expect it to grow in size too much. The changes will be on top of the reshaped front bumper.

We expect similar changes on the back end; however, the thick camouflage hides the visible updates. BMW may change the taillight design, although it may choose to change only the internal graphics. The new headlights will be placed above the reworked rear bumper. The spy shots don’t show off the interior, but you can get the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system and a large on-dash display. BMW has made this change with another mid-cycle refresh of the model.
Powertrain details are a mystery. However, there are rumors that BMW will add a PHEV variant to the lineup. The rest of the engine lineup could get some tweaks, though anyone wanting a fully electric version will have to wait until the next generation. There have been rumors of an all-electric Series 1 for several years, but none have materialized.
The car’s overall camouflage likely means this model is still in the early stages of development. It’s unclear when BMW will reveal the redesigned 1 Series, and we expect it to debut in 2023.
