Short tracks and tall SUVs don’t mix, and the GMC Yukon proves it the hard way. The driver of the SUV made a valiant attempt to “drag the crowd” and send it into the final corner, but he couldn’t hold it and instead hit the outside retaining wall.
The GMC Yukon met its fate at a short track in Colorado during the venue’s crowd drag event. During this event, fans are invited to participate in a series of elimination-style “drag” races around the asphalt oval with one important caveat: they must race in their personal vehicles.

The ill-fated GMC Yukon was paired with a Ford F-150 for a one-round firefight. After the first two corners, the Yukon fell behind the F-150, but its driver refused to go down without a fight. However, it was clear that the SUV was having trouble cornering, and we can only imagine what the body roll felt like in the cabin as it entered Turn 3. With the finish line in sight, and pride in it, the driver of the Yukon brought it down… and that’s when something went wrong.
The Yukon’s nose is low, the rear end jutting out. The driver overcorrected and tried to straighten it back up, but unfortunately, all he managed to do was swing the nose back the other way. The Yukon hit the Turn 4 wall, taking full impact from the driver’s side. The SUV actually rises on two wheels before finally returning to crawling, although one of the wheels separates and continues to bounce on the track.

Of course, the F-150 wins, and we’d be surprised if the GMC Yukon doesn’t lose out completely. We want to be the best in those conversations with insurance companies. The Yukon driver was fine after the crash – but he might think twice about treating the SUV like a standard car in the future.
Corvette Grand Sport drivers had a much better time in a series of crowd pulls at the same track a few years ago, putting the overconfident Tesla Cybertruck to shame.
