GM Suspends Unwanted Brake Assist Fix On Super Cruise-Equipped SUVs

Last December, GM released a service update to fix unwanted brake assist issues on its full-size SUV lineup, including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon. Now, service procedures are temporarily suspended on units equipped with Super Cruise.

According to a dealer bulletin sent last week, the undesirable brake assist fix outlined in Technical Service Bulletin N252521591 has been discontinued, but only for 2026 model year vehicles equipped with GM’s Super Cruise drive assist system. No explanation or timeline was given.

In addition to full-size SUVs, the bulletin also affects various model years of the 2026 Cadillac CT5, 2026 Chevy Equinox EV, 2026 Chevy Silverado EV, and 2026 GMC Sierra EV. However, the models listed here are not addressed in this latest update, so GM dealers will continue to implement necessary corrective actions.

The original TSB indicated that software anomalies could trigger unwanted and aggressive braking interventions, as if an obstacle was detected in front of the vehicle and the braking system was applied to reduce or prevent the impact. The regulations also state that “involved vehicles must be impounded and not turned over to customers, traded at a dealer, auctioned, used for demonstrations, or any other purpose” until repairs are made.

It appears owners of Super Cruise-equipped Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon will have to wait a little longer before getting their vehicles back – if they haven’t already been repaired. GM estimates this repair will take about an hour of work, and involves reprogramming the vehicle using a direct connection to GM’s diagnostic system.

Super Cruise is optional on the LT, RST, Premier and High Country trim levels on the Tahoe and Suburban. It is optional on the Elevation, AT4 and Denali variants of the Yukon and Yukon XL, while fitted as standard on the AT4 Ultimate and Denali Ultimate. The Escalade and Escalade ESV get Super Cruise as a standard feature on all trim levels.

All full-size SUVs ride on the GM T1 platform and are manufactured at GM’s Arlington plant in Texas. However, the automaker announced last summer that Escalade production would eventually shift to GM’s Orion plant in Michigan.
