As GM Authority has covered a lot of ground since 2024, General Motors is preparing a major overhaul of its pickup lineup, starting with the next-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 confirmed to be released for the 2027 model year. However, following these new light pickups is the new generation of the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. Now, GM Authority has learned exclusive information regarding when the next generation Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD will finally arrive.
Current Chevy Silverado HD
Sources familiar with this matter tell it so GM Authority that GM plans to launch the next-generation Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD for the 2029 model year and, as of this writing, production is planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2028.
This will mark the first full redesign for the heavy-duty Silverado and Sierra since the current generation launched for the 2020 model year – one model year after GM unveiled a redesign of the light-duty Silverado and Sierra.
Like the next-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, this heavy-duty pickup will follow a familiar formula. Overall, the next-generation Chevy Silverado HD and its GMC counterpart will adopt an updated version of GM’s T1 platform dubbed the T1-2, with the HD trucks using a stronger version of the frame and chassis compared to the light trucks. These updated trucks will provide improvements in capability, durability and overall refinement, all of which are top priorities in the highly competitive heavy-duty truck segment.

In addition, the next-gen Silverado HD and Sierra HD are expected to adopt GM’s next-generation centralized computing platform, which will replace the Global B electrical architecture used currently. The new system is designed to support faster processing speeds and more advanced technology features, aligning HD trucks with the latest goals dictated by GM software.
Beyond the architectural changes, buyers can expect a completely overhauled cabin with significant technology upgrades, better and more expressive materials, and increased levels of comfort and convenience. Highlights will include things like a new infotainment display, improved connectivity, and more useful towing and hauling technology.

The exterior will also be completely renovated, presenting a more modern and expressive design. From a powertrain standpoint, GM is expected to return to offering petrol and diesel engine options.
As usual, GM Authority will be here to cover all the latest news on the next generation Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, so keep it locked here.
