One of Germany’s most popular electric vehicles will soon get a major update, along with a new name. The ID.3 won’t be the “ID.Golf” yet; that’s expected to happen as early as 2028 with the ninth-generation Golf. But in April 2026, Volkswagen will introduce the ID.3 Neo. Now, the first teaser image has been released.

With the generation change, ID.3 gets extensive digital product upgrades. Meanwhile, the VW ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 are available to order with the latest generation software in Europe. The new software adds additional features across IDs. line.

These include, among other things, updated Travel Assist with traffic light recognition, as well as one-pedal drive, which allows the vehicle to slow to a stop via regenerative braking. Also new is the “Innovision” infotainment system.

Another new feature is an optional digital vehicle key. This allows access to the vehicle via a mobile device such as a smartphone or smartwatch, complementing the traditional key fob. Communication is wireless—similar to mobile payment transactions—and does not require a special app.

The control concept is also being revised: the ID of the future. The model will once again get physical buttons on the steering wheel to simplify operation of key functions. ID. The polo cockpit is most likely the reference here. Whether the ID.3 Neo will also get a retro-styled look remains unclear.

There are also changes to the powertrain and battery. The entry-level “Pure” versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 will receive the new APP 350 electric motor, rated at 188 hp. It produces higher torque and is intended to reduce energy consumption compared to the previous APP 310 motor. In the ID.4, this means an increase in WLTP range to 25 miles (40 kilometers). Combined with a new high-voltage lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a net capacity of 58 kWh, the system is designed to operate powerfully and efficiently.
