Nissan Debuts Three Frontier Concepts Previewing Customization Options

Nissan launched the new Frontier exactly a year ago and has enjoyed an 115 percent increase in sales during the first three months of availability over the previous year. To celebrate the success of the truck and to showcase the factory and aftermarket accessories available for the model, the Japanese automaker has prepared three concepts that will be shown at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show.

All based on the Frontier Crew Cab 2022 platform, the three prototypes tackle three different mid-size truck audiences and start with three different Frontier grade levels – S, SV and PRO-4X. Through the voice of Hiren Patel, the project’s lead designer at the manufacturer, Nissan explained that they wanted to show customers how they could modify their new Frontiers depending on their personal needs and how they were used.

Starting with the Project 72X Frontier, it pays homage to the Datsun 720, one of Nissan’s most successful models of the past and the first vehicle the company assembled in the United States at the Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant (Tennessee) in 1983. With this new modern interpretation , Nissan wanted to stick to the original formula of a boneless and affordable truck designed for fun and the outdoors. The key element of this overall impression is the set of white steel wheels, which are actually 2022 Frontier spare wheels wrapped in PRO-4X tires.

The Project Hardbody also draws inspiration from Nissan’s rich history in the truck segment, this time with a look reminiscent of the Nissan D21 Hardbody. The concept features a three-inch lifting kit with an adjustable upper control arm. The vintage look comes thanks to additional fender arches and old-school block-style alloy wheels with 33-inch tires. This pickup is finished in red with 1980s style graphics.

Last but not least, Project Adventure represents what die-hard fans can achieve based on the new Frontier platform. Riding five inches taller than the standard 2022 Frontier Crew Cab PRO-4X, this concept features a Yakima bed rack system, roof basket and roof awning. For quiet nights in the great outdoors, Nissan has also added a bed audio system by Kicker with Bluetooth connectivity. However, perhaps the coolest feature is the special body wrap that depicts the atlas of the United States.
